Homework
My homework philosophy is strong. However, the purpose of homework can be ruined quite easily. Please make sure that you child is doing homework in a place that is quiet, and monitored. Homework truly shows me how a student can preform on their own without the stress of a grade. It is meant to be practice of the skill that was taught that day. Of course, I encourage you to guide your student if they are struggling and please let me know, if that be the case.
Please avoid doing too much for them while they do their homework. "But that is not how Ms. Summerlin taught us!!" can be said a lot. Sometimes, there is a certain way I do teach each skill. However, I encourage all of my students to find a strategy that works best for them, not me. As long as they can explain and do it on their own, I am 100% fine with whatever way works best for them. My students can bring home their math notebooks every night. They are encouraged to do so as it is an excellent resource for them and YOU! It will break down all strategies and notes we have taken on that day's skill.
Math Homework - Students are expected to show all work. When a student shows all of his work, then if a mistake is made, I can identify where the mistake is happening, therefore we can correct it. If the work is not there, then I will not be able to help your child as well. If your student only brings in the final answer on his or her homework, they will clip down.
Reading Log - Your child is expected to read at least 30 minutes every night. Please write the title of the book your child read each night on the bottom of the day in the agenda. Also, please sign or initial on the bottom of the day so that I know your child actually read. If the title of the book and/or the day is not signed, then your child will clip down.
ELA Homework - This assignment will vary from week to week depending on the skill that is being taught. Usually, the ELA homework will be a weekly assignment that is assigned on Monday and due on Friday. If this changes, a note will be made in your child’s agenda. If it is a weekly ELA homework assignment and your child does not have it completed on Friday, your child will clip down twice.
*Homework will be checked first thing in the morning. If a student does not have his or her homework, then he/she will clip down.

Wednesday Folders
Each Wednesday I will send home your child's folder. This folder will contain papers from the office, community updates, and any graded work from the previous week. You will sign any papers inside that require it, as well as, the back of the folder. This folder is expected to be signed & returned by Friday. Please keep all of the graded work in the folder! Failure to bring the folder back signed & with the graded work by Friday will result in your child clipping down & a phone call home.
Request to Retest
If your child has brought home unsatisfactory scores in his/her Wednesday folder, your child may Request to Retest! The Request to Retest forms are available in my classroom. Your child may take the form home, fill out, and bring back to school. Request to Retest only applies to quizzes and tests. When a student retests, the new score will replace the original one!
